Not alone?

Jesus never promised us he would spare us from challenges, wounds or problems. However, he promised that we would never be alone or abandoned in the valleys of pain and death. He promised that He would always be with us!

Where does pain lead us?

Disappointments, wounds, pain and trials always hold some sort of meaning. They can lead us to the Father if we allow them to.

My daughters’ assault

When our three daughters were sexually assaulted and told my wife and me about it, our first reaction after the initial shock, was:

“how can we help our daughters face this unspeakable pain?”

Ruminating on revenge…

Extremely quickly after these dramatic events, as a father I ruminated, I had intrusive thoughts about seeking revenge and hoped that God himself would bring justice to those criminals.

However, I soon realized that by feeding such dark thoughts, I was only taking on a heavier load that was weighing me down and destroying me more day by day.

A process of personal liberation

It became imperative that I go through inner healing, through progressive restoration.

So, I came to Jesus, asking him not only to heal our daughters, but also to forgive those delinquents. I embarked on a process of forgiveness.

I choose forgiveness

In other words, without denying this painful past, I started choosing forgiveness: I actively entered this process. The more I chose to forgive, the more I felt comforted by the Holy Spirit in my “personal valley of death” (Ps. 23.4).

Such a complicated act of the will

Forgiving is first and foremost an act of our will. It’s a decision from which our inner peace takes root and begins to grow, as it is a liberating experience.

As I followed the path of forgiveness, I became more peaceful and able to start living again, taking back control of my life. This inner journey reconnected me to life.

My wife has also embarked on this road. She passed through the valley of death and was able to experience healing.

As for my three daughters, as you would expect, they have crossed deep valleys of death…

Nevertheless, with support from highly skilled professionals, assistance from those close to them and divine help from the Lord, each one of them has been able to move forward at their own pace to avoid living the past in the present. Each of them has experienced healing… step by step.

Young women released to live,

not survive

In other words, each of our daughters has experienced several successive, slow and profound times of restoration, which has enabled them to embrace life rather than just survive.

Today, these are young women who are not in survival mode, but who are living their lives to the full, liberated: they are doing well and are happy.

As parents

The hell our daughters went through initially plunged my wife and me into immeasurable grief. It was as if our lives had come to an end.

As mentioned earlier, at first, we allowed destructive emotions to overwhelm us. Gradually, we moved on… at our own pace.

On one hand we supported our daughters as best we could in every way possible. For example, by standing by their side, making ourselves available, accomanying them, and finding competent professionals to assist them;

On the other hand, our Lord has supported us and helped us to cross this valley of death together as well as individually, and to experience profound restoration and healing.

In other words, in our own way, we have crossed the valley of death and experienced healing. Furthermore, witnessing our daughters experience healing also helped us.

Our relationship with the Lord has intensified as we have come to a place of forgiveness.

So many liberations!

What more could I say?

We cannot blame God

for the sins of the world,

but we can let Him heal us

from the world’s sin.
